“DESIGN is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it WORKS.”
– Steve Jobs
Hi, my name is Joanne Lynch. I was raised the youngest of eight in an Irish Catholic family. As the only redhead in the house, I was frequently teased about being spawned by the milkman. I made up for this isolation by having three redheaded daughters, which is a rare and wonderful adventure.
After graduating college, I worked as a photojournalist before heading to graduate school to master the skills to write the stories as well as illustrate them. A course called The Magazine turned out to be a turning point. Our class was given the opportunity to create the prototype of an alumni magazine for Temple University School of Dentistry. Since no one had design experience, I volunteered to be art director. This involved many late nights teaching myself the software on a borrowed Mac II. It was a painstakingly slow process. Photoshop didn't even have a history panel then so with every mistake, I was back to ground zero. But despite the tiresome learning curve on a sluggish machine, I fell in love with design.
Today, I'm a freelance graphic designer, art director, copywriter and photographer. I just relocated from a tiny seaside shrimping village on Florida's Nature Coast to the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. When I'm not catching a healthy computer tan, I try to avoid the screen as much as possible. However, I've found television's new Golden Age and some excellently scripted shows hard to resist. I also enjoy running, kayaking, reading, hiking, traveling and live music.
I enjoy creating and seamlessly translating a powerful brand across many diverse platforms. An effective brand strategy gives your business a major edge in increasingly competitive markets.
The truth is, writing great
copy takes time and energy.
It’s both an art and a science.
To craft successful wording,
you must understand your audience to the letter.
The design bug bit me harder than I expected. Combining images, words, and ideas requires talent not just with design, but with a range of constantly evolving tools and technologies.
I think Robert Adams summed it up perfectly: “No place is boring if I have a good night's sleep and a pocket full of unexposed film.”
